3 Suggestions For Saving Money On Your Car Insurance

Posted on

Nearly everyone is required to have auto insurance. In most states it is against the law to own, or drive a car without it. This is why it is important to calculate your auto insurance into your monthly budget as a regular expense. However, that doesn't mean that you have to spend lots of money on your insurance. In fact, there are many different ways that you can save money on auto insurance. Here are a couple things that you can do.

1. Watch Out For Double Coverage

Many people carry multiple types of insurance. For instance, you probably have life insurance, health insurance, home insurance and so forth. In some of those policies there will be doubling up of coverage. A great example of this is that in your auto insurance policy, there might be a section that offers coverage of your medical expenses should you get in an accident. In most cases your health insurance will cover your medical expenses. This means that you are paying for more coverage that you need, because you are most likely not going to access the medical portion of your auto insurance.

Look at all of your insurance policies and see if there is any doubling. If there is, you might want to consider getting it removed. By doing so you can save money.

2. The Older The Car, The Less Coverage You Need

Some people choose to drive an older car. Perhaps it is a car that you let your teenage child drive, or you are saving money and driving an older, high mileage car. If you have an older car you can save a good deal of money. You should consider lowering the amount of coverage that you have the car. For example, you may not need coverage that covers cosmetic damage. For example, if there is a hailstorm and it damages the car, do you want your insurance to kick in and make it look new again? Probably not, because the car may not be worth it. Therefore, you should consider getting the most minimal coverage of the car.

3. Raise Your Deductible

One of the best ways to lower your insurance costs each month is to raise your deductible. This means that if you do get in an accident you pay a little more up front, but you save money each month on your premium. Many people prefer it this way because the likelihood of getting in an accident is low, so they choose to just pay more out of pocket if they need to make a claim.

These are just a couple simple things you can do to save money on your auto insurance. Contact an insurance company like Appomattox Insurance & Financial Services Inc. for more information.
